چکیده

We show data from a working 45-stage analog VLSI cochlea, built on a 2.2” x 2.2“ tiny chip. The novel architectural features in this cochlea are: 1. The use of a wide-linear-range low-noise subthreshold transconductance amplifier, 2. The use of “fuse-like” nonlinear positive-feedback amplification in the second-order cochlear fJter. Several new circuit techniques used in the design are described here. The fuse nonlinearity shuts off the positive-feedback amplification at large signal levels instead of merely saturating it, like in prior designs, and leads to increased adaptation and improved large-signal stability in the filter. The fuse filter implements a functional model of gain control due to outer hair cells in the biological cochlea. We present data for travelling-wave patterns in our silicon cochlea that reproduce linear and nonlinear effects in the biological cochlea.

Analog Implementations of Auditory Models

The challenge of making cost-effective implementations of auditory models has led us to pursue an analog VLSI micro-power approach. Experiments with the first few generations of analog cochlea chips showed some of both the potential and the problems of this approach. The inherent exponential behavior of MOS transistors in the subthreshold or weak-inversion region leads to nonlinear filter circu...

Design and Analysis of Linear Voltage to current converters using CMOS Technology

Voltage to current converters or TRANSCONDUCTANCE amplifiers, find its applications in both traditional analog ICs e.g. amplifier and filters as well as current analog VLSI e.g. Field programmable analog arrays and various other neural networks. A complete review of different linear V-I converter has been done in this paper. Since the basic V-I convertor circuit uses common source differential ...

Analog electronic cochlea with mammalian hearing characteristics

Systems close to bifurcations can be used as small-signal amplifiers. Biophysical measurements suggest that the active amplifiers present in the mammalian cochlea are systems close to a Hopf bifurcation. The pure tone and transient signal output of our electronic hearing sensor based on this observation provides output that is fully compatible with the electrophysiological data from the mammali...

High-Frequency Distortion Analysis of Analog Integrated Circuits

An approach is presented for the analysis of the nonlinear behavior of analog integrated circuits. The approach is based on a variant of the Volterra series approach for frequencydomain analysis of weakly nonlinear circuits with one input port, such as amplifiers, and with more than one input port, such as analog mixers and multipliers. By coupling numerical results with symbolic results, both ...
